Intro
Confused about blood cell types? Don't panic ... you're not alone! Even these cells seem to be having an identity crisis.

(You'll find this actual neutrophil on slide 22.)

Slide 1: Bone Marrow
Recall that erythrocytes (RBCs) are about 7 to 8 microns. Learn to use them as the tissue's "built-in" scale bars. Neutrophils (green) Neutrophilic Metamyelocyte (blue)

Bar = 30 Microns

Slide 2: Bone Marrow
Prorubricyte (blue), Band neutrophil (red), Platelets (yellow), Platelets are cell fragments produced by megakaryocytes. You will see a few of them on most of the slides.

Slide 7: Bone Marrow
At a lower power, you can see how the megakaryocyte is many times larger than the other blood cells.

Slide 9: Bone Marrow
Notice the granules in the cytoplasm of the promyelocytes (yellow). Plasma cells (blue) are commonly seen in peripheral tissues where they secrete antibodies.

Slide 15: Blood Smear

Monocytes are motile and phagocytic. In fact, they are the precursors to the macrophage. Notice how much larger they are than the red cells.

Slide 16: Blood Smear
You can see how the nucleus of this monocyte is shaped somewhat like a horseshoe.

And Finally...
You've made it! You should be proud of yourself ... these cells seem happy for you anyway. Go back and spend some time on the erythroid and myeloid series and be comfortable with the stages.

(By the way, you'll find this actual neutrophil on slide 10.)
